Flight Hurricane Season 101 Boarding Now!
By Helen Sohne

“This is your captain speaking! Please listen to this safety presentation by your flight attendants...”

Pretend you're on the 99th flight of your lifetime. You have heard it SO many times; oxygen mask, seat belts, exits, flotation device. Yet, if you're like most people, you only listen with half an ear. In a real emergency, you might not remember what to do.

There seems to be something in our psyches (like ignoring our parents growing up) that causes us to not hear something the more it is repeated. Hurricane Preparedness info can be just like that. We hear the information many times and are certain we know what to do, until we realize we didn't heed advice. Perhaps that's why some people don’t find out that they can’t close their shutters until the day before a hurricane.

Don’t be like the person who didn’t know the oxygen mask needs to cover both the nose and mouth. Take control
and prepare now. Here's the basic preparation list:

  • Prune loose or overhanging tree limbs
  • Check hurricane shutters
  • Purchase canned or packaged food for a week and one gallon of water per person per day
  • Refill meds ahead of time
  • Restock first aid kit
  • Purchase battery-operated fans, radio, flashlights
  • Check dates on batteries, have enough for a week.
  • Maintain supply of garbage bags, baby wipes and hand sanitizer
  • Keep important documents in a water tight zip lock bag and make copies to send to a relative
  • Photograph belongings

When a Hurricane Warning is Issued (36 hours prior)

  • Get cash and fill car gas tank
  • Charge cell phones
  • Bring outdoor furniture, potted plants, any loose items indoors
  • Fill bathtub with water for flushing and bathing.
  • Pack a "To-go bag" with essentials for quick evacuation
