Let Me Tell You About . . .

We had a really fabulous Feb meeting about JEWISH ARTISTS, presented by Sandra Newmark & Phyllis Friedland, both docents from Nova Southeast University Art Museum and members of the Speakers Bureau.

The slide program gave us a glance at changes in Jewish art - from ‘illuminating’ Hebrew text in the Sarajevo Hagaddah - to art that included human forms but not faces - to a more comprehensive look at Jewish Artists’ work spanning World Wars 1 & 2, the Russian Revolution, the Immigrants’ experience & the Holocaust.

The presentation, which included observations about specific works of art, and brief biographical sketches about the lives of the 20 artists, was most informative and illustrated how the Artists used their Jewish background in their work. We all appreciated the program & thanked them for a wonderful, and original, presentation.

Again, we thank our hostesses Claire Mazen and Sara Todd; also Maxine Jaffee, her aide, and Roslyn Bregman for the delicious cakes. Thanks also to Arleen Semel, our welcomer, and Debbie Silverstein, for information on Jewish events in the community, articles and relevant TV programs online, plus assistance with publicity.

Remember: our Yiddish conversation group meets Tuesday mornings at 10:30 in the clubhouse. All our Friday programs are in English.
